Idiots guide to Hinduism
Here is another way I incorporate FEEL4 into my life...
Basically I have so much information going into my knowledge-hungry brain that at times it can feel like I have a mind like a sieve. As a result I occasionally need to refresh my knowledge on things I have already studied. One example is Hinduism.
Today I suddenly thought to myself, what exactly is Hinduism?I am a huge fan of Taoism and am always reading up on "The Way". In fact I am currently reading The Scholar Warrior by Ding Ming-Dao. But whilst reading the book, I suddenly thought to myself, what exactly is Hinduism? My mind went blank. And so I quickly used FEEL4 to make my one and only "Focus" (Step 1 of the formula) this:
FOCUS: I am focusing on understanding what Hinduism is, right now!
With my focus in place, those of you who have read the book or have done the free course will know, my mind automatically started to run through the other steps of FEEL4.
I felt energized to want to find out more about Hinduism because I was eager to gain some knowledge from an ancient philosophy which would improve how I help others feel better and how I might enhance my own life.
I then engaged with searching google for some knowledge and posted it here for anyone to learn from my path.
What I have learnt so far from the attached video and some google searching are the following bits of knowledge:
1. Hinduism is considered one of, if not, the oldest religion (or philosophy / culture depending on your preference), founded around the 5th century BC. The Rig Veda (holy text) was written more than 3800 years ago.
2. Hinduism does not have any standard practice to follow (although it does have them)
3. Hinduism believes in reincarnation and the cycle of life.
4. Hinduism is known for its colourful deities like, Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma; although they are each said to all belong to one universal spirit called Brahman (who has no gender).
5. 15% of the world's population subscribe to Hinduism, with around 90% residing in India and Nepal.
6. Hinduism is the 3rd largest religion in the world, after Christianity and Islam. There are around 2 million Hindus in the USA, and just under 1 million in the UK.
7. The goal of life in Hinduism is to attain salvation, or moksha. Self realisation and freedom from the cycle of death and rebirth is the final goal.
8. Hinduism believes in a circular rather than a linear concept of time. Time is divided into four ages - the Satya yuga (golden age of innocence), Tretha yuga, Dwapara yuga and Kali yuga.
9. 108 is a sacred number in Hinduism and it is considered auspicious. This is why malas and garlands have 108 beads. 108 is actually the ratio of the sun and the moon's distance from the Earth.
10. It is one of the few religions that does not consider the pursuit of wealth a sin. Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth (both material and spiritual), is testament to that fact.
11. The word 'Juggernaut' is actually derived from Lord Jagannath. It was originally used to denote the Rath Yatra temple car, which was so massive it would crush devotees under the wheels.
12. Both male and female deities are worshipped with equal reverence in Hinduism. This is also because in Hinduism, god is considered both male and female, or as the one who has no sex or both.
13. Om is actually believed to be the manifestation of consciousness in sound form.
14. Buddhism and Sikhism were both derived from Hinduism.
15. According to Hindus, the religion has no founder or origin.
16. Angkor Wat, Cambodia's defining temple complex, was originally a Hindu temple. It was built by Suryavarman II in the 12th century and originally dedicated to Vishnu, before it transformed into a Buddhist temple.
